Study the business of sport with Adelaide United and Flinders University

The Diploma in Sport Business is a one-year course, combining the knowledge of Flinders academics with the real-world skills and experience of Adelaide United Football Club.

Delivered from our city campus in Festival Plaza and Coopers Stadium - the home of Adelaide United, this one-year diploma will help you develop an in-depth understanding of the business of sport - from running local sports programs to marketing major teams.

With a particular focus on the application of knowledge and skills in a sport, club and community context, the unique aspect of this diploma is the 50 hours of work integrated learning with Adelaide United. You will receive an authentic and exciting opportunity to apply what you learn in a real-world, club context.

You'll explore areas such as Business of Sport, Sport and Community Engagement and Development, Sports Management, Leadership, Sport Marketing, Sport Business Data and Sport Event Management. This will be paired with integrated learning opportunities at Coopers stadium and insights from Adelaide United guest lecturers.

Successful completion of the diploma guarantees entry into Flinders degrees, including the Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Business (Sport Management) or Bachelor of Sport and Active Recreation.

Whether you’re completing Year 12 or have been out of school for a while, there are a variety of pathways for the Diploma in Sport Business.

I have recently completed

If you’ve finished Year 12 (and do not have more than 2 years of higher education study), or are currently studying Year 12 and complete the SACE/IB (or interstate equivalent) you are eligible to compete for uni entry via your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

You could also be eligible for guaranteed entry, and adjustment factors to boost your ATAR.

The University will also consider applicants who have SACE completion.

Research Project B pathway
If you have strong results in the Research Project B subject you will be considered for entry into Flinders on the basis of your Year 12 results and Research Project B performance.

Gain an introduction to the knowledge, skills and teamwork required to operate sporting-oriented businesses.

Introduction to Sport Marketing

Discuss the key marketing concepts and how they are applied within club and community contexts. Explore marketing theory and discuss the factors that influence marketing decisions.

Sport, Community Engagement and Development

Study key aspects of community engagement and development in the sports context, including participation, diversity, inclusion and respect.

Exploring and Reporting Sport Business Data

Learn how to interpret, summarise and report data in the sports context. Design and present reports for the club.

Sports Management and Leadership

Study management and leadership principles and related theory in the sports context, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait leadership. Relate management and leadership principles and theory to authentic business scenarios in the club context and explore the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving organisational goals.

Sports Event Management

Analyse the value of event types and role in club and community contexts. Explore event design and management and study the varying roles and relationships of stakeholders in the organisation of events.

Introduction to Sports Law

Learn about sources of legislation in a sporting context, including the principles of law in relation to sporting organisations, teams, and contracts.

Sport Management Practicum

50 hours of practical experience including project work in trimester 1 and 2.
