This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of genetics, with a particular focus on those areas that are relevant to general practice in South Australia. The course reviews basic genetic concepts, types and utility of genetic testing, legal and ethical considerations, and most importantly, when it is appropriate to refer to a specialist service.
This course begins with an introduction to genetics and types of genetic tests that are currently available. This is followed by modules on genetic conditions which are commonly seen in General Practice, and genetic testing in the context of General Practice. Social, legal and ethical issues are also discussed. Concepts are illustrated with case studies and self-assessment activities.
Self-assessments consist of quizzes within the individual modules, and six case studies for self-evaluation.
Upon completion you will:
Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the completion of the workshop.
This course complies with the professional development standards of health professional accreditation bodies and attendees may use these hours to accrue CPD points.
