Induction to International Baccalaureate (IB) Education

Who should attend?

• Teachers who are employed in a school which is planning to offer an IB programme, or who are newly appointed to an IB World School, or who seek an opportunity for developing a deeper understanding of IB philosophy, principles and practices
• Postgraduate Education students
• Initial Teacher Education students who have completed at least one year (full-time-equivalent) of a Bachelor of Education
• Recent education graduates seeking employment or temporary relief teaching (TRT) in an IB school. 

Course content

• Philosophy and principles of IB Education, including international-mindedness, inquiry and learner profiles
• Explanation of the four IB programmes and their articulation
• Focus on inquiry and collaborative planning in relation to one IB programme
• Development of professional learning goals in IB education

Learning outcomes

On completion of this short course, participants will be expected to be able to:

1. Collaboratively design, implement and evaluate a simulated inquiry lesson applying IB philosophy and pedagogy and attributes of the IB learner profile.
2. Critically reflect on IB concepts, values and approaches to teaching and learning.
3. Evaluate educational practices through an IB perspective.
4. Design professional learning goals that articulate the achievement of teacher qualities in the context of IB education.

Assessment

Assessment (for credit purposes) is optional, and will consist of an inquiry project, critical reflections and evaluation (to the equivalent of 4,500 words).

Credit

Participants who elect to complete the Assessment Module (at an additional cost) will qualify for 4.5 units of credit into postgraduate education courses at Flinders University (subject to course rules).

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Participants who attend all 5 days will receive a Certificate of Attendance for the 30 hour course.
