Who should attend?

This 10 day face-to-face non-award short course prepares registered nurses with the skills and knowledge required to become effective members of remote primary health care teams.

What you will study

The 10-day course is presented as two intensives. The first intensive - Framing Indigenous Health - has a focus on cultural safety, the social determinants of health and primary health care. The intensive will enhance knowledge and skills specifically relating to the geographical, environmental, and cultural context of remote health service delivery. The second intensive - Remote Advanced Nursing Practice - develops foundational skills and knowledge for advanced nursing practice in remote areas. The Remote Area Nurse Model of Consultation is the basis for clinical reasoning and assessment, clinical communication, and collaborative practice. Use of standard treatment manuals are used to guide evidence-based practice.

Assessment

Structured observation of Remote Area Nurse consultation plus 100% attendance.

Learning outcomes

Examine the expanded scope of practice for remote area nurses with an emphasis on advanced clinical responsibilities, collaborative multidisciplinary approaches, and the autonomy required in remote healthcare environments.
Develop cultural sensitivity and communication strategies that facilitate effective engagement with Indigenous communities, fostering trust and understanding in healthcare interactions.
Evaluate the influence of social and cultural determinants of health on the wellbeing of individuals and communities with a specific focus on remote and Indigenous contexts.
Demonstrate proficiency in conducting comprehensive health assessments using the Remote Area Nurse Model of Consultation to ensure holistic and systematic evaluation of patient needs.
Integrate evidence-based clinical guidelines into nursing practice to address the unique health needs of people living in remote areas.
Apply innovative problem-solving skills to deliver high-quality nursing care in resource-constrained settings, effectively utilising available tools, technologies, and strategies to overcome challenges.
