Why study Laws and Legal Practice (Graduate Entry) (Honours) at Flinders
A Flinders law degree will open many doors, and not all will lead to a courtroom. While some students will become the judges and prosecutors of tomorrow, others will chart their course in business, diplomacy, social justice and human rights. Our graduates work all over the world.
Successful completion satisfies the academic and practical requirements underpinning eligibility to be admitted as a barrister and solicitor in South Australia.
When applying for admission to practise law, you will need to satisfy the Board of Examiners that you are a 'fit and proper person to be admitted'. You will also be required to give written authority for the Board of Examiners to seek a written report about you from Flinders University and any other teaching institution at which you have pursued a course of study (including degrees other than law).
The program enables you to acquire essential foundational legal skills. You will gain knowledge of Australian law and the ability to critically evaluate it with reference to its historical development and context. You will also acquire a range of key skills such as interviewing, drafting, advocacy, negotiation and teamwork to enable you to translate legal rights into practice within real-world scenarios. The honours program includes an enhanced research training experience, the option for up to two masters-level electives and a minor dissertation. Topics cover areas such as legal research and writing, criminal law and legal method, introduction to public law, and contracts.
Study the practical legal topics required to be admitted to legal practice, undertake Work-Integrated Learning placements for practical legal topics, and get hands-on experience through Flinders’ Legal Advice Clinic.
