Overview

The Masters of Clinical Epidemiology has been designed in consultation with Industry partners, to provide you with specialised knowledge and skills required for clinical research. Learn how to conduct and design clinical trials, frame appropriate research questions and interpret research evidence to improve clinical outcomes of patients.

Learn how to conceptualise, design, and carry out health care research by applying epidemiological methods, and integrate the best available research evidence with clinical expertise.
Build and extend your knowledge on epidemiological and biostatistical methods along with elective courses to prepare for a career in clinical epidemiology or evidence-based healthcare.
Apply skills to define research questions, design a trial, estimate sample size and power, synthesise complex information, and interpret and communicate knowledge.

Professional accreditation/recognition

The clinical trial topic has content to the standards of the Australian Clinical Trial Alliance (ACTA). Currently ACTA does not have any structured approach to seek accreditation of the clinical trials topics taught at the universities. Flinders is seeking the endorsement of topics by ACTA governing body.

What you will study

This course will provide support for clinical and applied researchers in epidemiology and study design, design of clinical trials, biostatistics, health economics, rural health, indigenous health, research governance and ethics, how to critically think and develop studies.

Students will demonstrate an ability to:

Critically analyse and synthesise complex information, solve problems, and demonstrate a deeper understanding of concepts and theories. 
Interpret and communicate complex concepts and ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences through verbal presentations.
Apply the established theories to a body of new data and issues.

The content and learning activities in this course will be designed to help students achieve the following objectives:

Design clinical trials and appropriately compute the required sample size and power estimation for grant applications.
Apply biostatistical methods to analyse electronic medical records.
Apply epidemiological methods to develop appropriate research questions.
Learn how to identify biases in data sets.
Apply health economic and biostatistical concepts and methods to manage and improve health care.

Practical experience

Using real world data sets students will be trained on all core and elective topics.

Entry requirements

Applicants must normally hold one of the following:

An Honours degree in the same field of study, or
A Graduate Diploma in the same field of study, or
A Bachelor Degree in a discipline related to the field of study and have a minimum of two years full-time equivalent professional experience in the field of study.
