You will have the skills to improve health outcomes for individuals and populations. The Graduate Diploma includes the option to register with the Australian Counselling Association (level 1).
Graduates of this program are competent and equipped to contribute to improving mental health service delivery because of their specialised knowledge and clinical competencies in CBT. Graduates can work in both private and public health care organisations and are trained to work in a range of primary mental health care roles. Graduates who are already in health professional roles are well-placed to embark on leadership positions clinically, academically and through research opportunities.
The Graduate Diploma in Counselling Behavioural Health (GDPCBH) is accredited with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). Students completing the GDPCBH will be eligible to apply for membership as set out in the ACA.
The Master of Counselling Behavioural Health (MCBH) is accredited with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and requires in-person attendance at all teaching related activities.
Students intending to progress to the Master of Counselling (Behavioural Health), must complete the Graduate Certificate and/or Graduate Diploma courses in-person and on-campus study mode to meet the accreditation requirements of the Master of Counselling (Behavioural Health).
Students complete core and optional topics aimed at providing students with the understanding, and skills in person-centred behavioural health counselling to improve physical and mental health outcomes for individuals and populations.
The courses aim to provide opportunities for individuals working in health and related areas to increase and develop their knowledge within a competency-based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) framework. The Master’s program further deepens and expands clinical practice in CBT through an engaging and innovative environment that places the individual at the centre of the learning process. Topics cover areas such as Fundamental Counselling Skills, Low intensity CBT for psychological disorders, Fundamentals of Clinical Practice, CBT for psychological disorders, Motivational Interviewing, and Strength-Based approaches for Young People.
All students are required to undertake clinical practicums to demonstrate competency in the delivery of specific counselling approaches. Industry placements may be available in South Australia or interstate which comply with the program and the clinical placement requirements of the College of Medicine and Public Health.
