This course is not offered in 2022.
The Master of Engineering (Materials) focuses on the selection, production and behaviour of practical materials used in engineered products.
Materials engineering is an interdisciplinary field that studies composition, structure, processing, properties and performance of materials used for products. The development and engineering of materials are of paramount importance in advancing technology, and essential for any industrial process or technology. Materials enable engineers to design and manufacture ideas into devices and structures with the best performance.
The course has been designed to provide you with a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of materials engineering, and an understanding of advanced processing and fabrication methods of engineering materials and their characterisation.
You will develop an awareness of the social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of materials engineering in the design and manufacturing of engineering components and processes, and an understanding of your professional and ethical responsibilities.
The course teaches you to critically analyse and evaluate information and solve materials-related problems, work and interact professionally, and undertake research in materials engineering and relevant areas.
Flinders University has a research strength in materials engineering. Our leading researchers, well-equipped laboratories and materials characterisation facilities provide an excellent environment for advanced research activities materials engineering.

Materials engineers are able to find jobs in almost all fields in which technology is developed, providing a great range of career opportunities.
This program is provisionally accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer. Professional engineering courses accredited by Engineers Australia are recognised internationally under the Washington Accord. Graduates will meet the academic requirements for attaining chartered professional engineering status.
The Master of Engineering (Materials) program at Flinders consists of 72 units requiring two years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). The course is offered by the College of Science and Engineering. It offers a unique combination of advanced areas such as materials selection in design, metal forming, nanomaterials, polymers, biomaterials, corrosion, fatigue and fracture, characterisation techniques, organic synthesis, and materials for civil, electrical and optical applications.
The course is designed to present practical aspects of materials engineering, and also includes a research project for you to work on advanced relevant areas. You will have the opportunity to develop practical skills in Flinders’ well-equipped laboratories at Tonsley together with the Centre for NanoScale Science and Technology. Laboratories include the Advanced Materials Laboratory, Solid Mechanics and Materials Laboratory, and Large Scale Material Testing Laboratory. There are also materials-characterisation facilities located at Bedford Park.
