Medical student placements

This information is for domestic and international medical students wanting to undertake elective placements within the Northern Territory.

Placements are an important opportunity to get practical experience in a variety of specialties and settings, and the chance to interact with a diverse range of patients.

Medical student placements are available to approved medical students enrolled in their final year of their medical degree, within the Northern Territory in sites such as Royal Darwin Hospital*, Palmerston Regional Hospital, Alice Springs Hospital, Katherine District Hospital, Gove District Hospital and Tennant Creek Hospital.

*Please note that all Darwin medical student placements are subject to availability and formal approval.

How to apply

Request an application form and attach the following documents:

Resume/CV
Proof of Professional Indemnity Insurance cover
University confirmation letter (International applications must include a statement regarding your level of English competency)

Once you have received a letter of offer, you must provide the following:

Current police check (For international application this clearance must be from your home country, translated into English)
Copy of personal health/travel insurance
Updated immunisation record as per the vaccination schedule supplied

Working with children clearance (Ochre Card)

Once you have received formal approval of your placement:

All students will need to apply for a Northern Territory Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card) at least 8 weeks before your placement start date.

You cannot commence a placement in the Northern Territory without being able to produce your Ochre Card prior to the placement start date. If you arrive in the Northern Territory to start your placement without your Ochre Card, you will have your placement cancelled and you will be sent home. Flinders University will not be responsible for any costs incurred if you do not have this Working with children clearance certificate.

You will need to be proactive in following up your application with Safe NT if eight weeks passes and you have not received your card. Persistence in following up with them is advised until a response has been received.

International applicants are unable to apply online for an Ochre Card and you must complete a hardcopy application and send via post.
