Obstetricians and Gynaecologists are medical specialists that specialise in pregnancy, childbirth, and female reproductive health. They can additionally detect sexually transmitted diseases, perform reproductive health screening and surgical procedures (such as caesareans, hysterectomies, and tubal ligations).
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) trains and accredits doctors throughout Australia and New Zealand in the specialties of obstetrics and gynaecology. The College also supports research into women’s health and acts as an advocate for women’s healthcare.
A small number of doctors undertake subspecialist training after becoming a Fellow of RANZCOG. They are trained to work exclusively in one of the five areas below:

FRANZCOG Training Selection is highly competitive. Throughout the selection process, the College bases its assessment of each prospective trainee on consistent selection criteria.
There are currently four pathways to Fellowship: The Generalist Pathway, Academic Pathway, Advanced Obstetric Pathway and Subspeciality Pathway.
Certificate of Women’s Health
The Certificate of Women’s Health (CWH) is intended for medical professionals with a special interest in office-based obstetrics and gynaecology. This qualification can be undertaken on its own, or in combination with the Diploma and/or Advanced Diploma of RANZCOG. Following successful completion of the Certificate, you will be qualified to deliver shared antenatal and postnatal care, office gynaecology and family planning.
Diploma of RANZCOG
The Diploma of RANZCOG (DRANZCOG) builds on the skills developed through the Certificate of Women’s Health. It’s intended for medical professionals with a special interest in hospital-based obstetrics and gynaecology. This qualification can be undertaken on its own, or in combination with the Certificate of Women’s Health and/or Advanced Diploma of RANZCOG. Following successful completion of the Diploma, you will be qualified to safely undertake non-complex deliveries, and perform basic gynaecological procedures.
Advanced Diploma of RANZCOG
The Advanced Diploma of RANZCOG (DRANZCOG Adv.) builds on the skills developed through the basic Diploma. It’s intended for medical professionals who wish to further develop their knowledge and skills in hospital-based obstetrics and gynaecology. This qualification can be undertaken on its own, or in combination with the Certificate of Women’s Health and/or Diploma of RANZCOG. Following successful completion of the Advanced Diploma, you will be qualified to undertake complex deliveries and advanced gynaecological procedures, and to perform basic early and late pregnancy ultrasound scanning.
Prevocational Pathway
The Prevocational Pathway establishes foundation-level knowledge and skills in obstetrics and gynaecology, with a focus on preparing prevocational doctors for entry into the Fellowship of RANZCOG specialist training program.

This training pathway is intended for post-graduate year 1 and 2 (PGY1 and PGY2) medical graduates, and other doctors seeking to further specialise after completing the Certificate of Women’s Health, Diploma of RANZCOG or Advanced Diploma of RANZCOG.
To apply for the FRANZCOG training program you must be qualified in Medicine and Surgery, with a primary degree issued in Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand, or from an approved international institution.
